The Ozone story

When used as part of a complete swimming pool or spa water purification system, ozone can help to reduce the unpleasant side effects associated ozone.gif (42546 bytes)with conventional chemical water treatment programs. These common problems are caused when chlorine or bromine kill the contaminants introduced into pool or spa water, creating a build up of by-products (chloramines or bromamines) in the water. As this build up occurs, swimmers and bathers can experience eye irritation, itchy  skin and "chlorine odor". The by-products are removed periodically by "shocking" the water quality. Immediately after shocking, pool or spa water looks and feels its best, but then it deteriorates as chemical by-products build up again.

An ozonator, installed as part of the circulation system, introduces ozone, the strongest oxidizer practicably and commercially available, into the water at a constant rate while the pool or spa equipment is running. The ozone oxidizes chemically created by-products from the water as they are produced, helping to prevent the build up of these contaminants and the side effects associated with them. Ozone helps to create more consistently clean and healthy water, automatically.

Reducing or eliminating irritated eyes, itchy skin and odors is not the only benefit of using ozone. The higher and more consistent water quality level that ozone helps to produce means that pool and spa equipment will be better protected form corrosion and damage, reducing exposure to costly repair or maintenance. Under certain conditions, ozone can also act as a sanitizer, helping chlorine or bromine to do their job more effectively. Many ozone users have experienced significant reductions in chemical usage and cost as a result.

To produce more consistently clean and healthy pool and spa water, automatically and with less work and fewer chemicals, ozone is the answer.

The F.A.Q. about Ozone

Q. HOW EASY IS IT TO INSTALL AN OZONATOR

A. Very Easy! The ozonator comes with everything needed to install, and the installation takes only a few minutes.

Q. WHAT IS OZONE?

A. Ozone is nature's natural purifier. it is a chemical known as 0-3 and it is produced form simple oxygen molecules in our atmosphere. It is the strongest oxidizer commercially available and it is also a very powerful sanitizer and disinfectant.

Q. HOW IS OZONE PRODUCED?

A. Ozone is produced, in nature, from lightning bolts during electrical rainstorms. This is how nature purifies the air we breathe. It is also produced by ultra violet rays from the sun. When these rays enter earth's atmosphere, the oxygen in the air is converted into ozone. This is how earth's ozone layer was created. The ultra violet method is called photochemical ozone generation and it is used in all SpasEtc. ozonators. The special ultra violet lamps. When the air which we breathe, which contains approximately 16%-20% oxygen, is passed by these lamps, the oxygen is converted into ozone.

Q. WHERE IS OZONE USED?

A. Ozone is not used just to treat pool and spa water. It is used to purify bottled water, municipal drinking water, cooling tower water, sewage, aquatic life tanks, aquacultural water and process water. It is also used to purify air and to clean carpet, draperies and upholstery.

Q. WHAT'S OZONE'S JOB IN POOL OR SPA WATER?

A. Ozone primarily oxidizes the by-products created when contaminants, such as bacteria and viruses, are killed by chlorine or bromine so that they can be removed from the water. Ozone can also assist chlorine or bromine by functioning as a sanitizer in its own right, killing these same contaminants.

Q. HOW DOES OZONE IMPROVE A CONVENTIONAL CHEMICAL PROGRAM?

A. Conventional chemical treatment programs require a suitable residual of a sanitizer, such as chlorine or bromine, to be kept in the water. As this sanitizer does its job of killing bacteria and viruses, it leaves by-products called chloramines or bromamines in the water. They build up and can eventually cause eye irritation, itchy skin, odors, scum lines, etc... Periodically, you shock, or superchlorinate, to remove these by-products. Your water quality can vary from sparkling and good feeling right after you shock to irritable and hazy when you need to shock. The time period between these extremes is usually determined by how diligently you maintain your pool or spa. Ozone becomes your favorite helper because it automatically "does the maintenance" for you. By removing these by-products from the water, it provides more consistently high water quality, both continuously and automatically when your pool or spa equipment is running.

Q. WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS WHICH OZONE WILL ELIMINATE FOR ME?

A. The most common problems which ozone helps to eliminate include;

- eye irritation (red eye) and itchy skin

- "chlorine" odors

- the need for a shower to remove chemical body film

- faded bathing suits and discolored hair

- scum lines and foaming

Q. IF OZONE SMOG IS DANGEROUS, ARE OZONE SYSTEMS SAFE?

A. Yes! High ozone concentrations in air can cause respiratory problems. Since ozone levels are able to build up in certain areas, they are reported with other air contaminants, such as carbon monoxide, which all combine to form the "smog". Our ozonators produce very low dosages of ozone. They have been tested safe in respect to off gas levels in spas and there is little, if any, off gas in pools.

Q. IS OZONE ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE?

A. Yes! The small amounts of ozone produced will not create problems in the water or in air. Also, the only by-product ozone leaves behind in the water is oxygen.

Q. CAN I USE JUST OZONE TO SANITIZE MY POOL OR SPA?

A. No! Ozone's primary function is to oxidize or burn out the chemical by-products in the water. The low dosages of ozone being produced along with its short life make it improbable that you could build up and safe sanitizing residual. Without a residual sanitizer in the water, the end result could very easily be and algae bloom or unhealthy water.

Q. IF I STILL HAVE TO USE CHLORINE OR BROMINE, WHY SHOULD I USE OZONE?

A. Chlorine and bromine are very effective sanitizers. Their drawback, however, has been the problems created by the by-products as they are produced and  it will help to eliminate these once considered "normal problems". Ozone will also act as a back up sanitizer to help  chlorine or bromine to kill bacteria and viruses.

Q. CAN OZONE DAMAGE  MY POOL OR SPA?

A. No! When properly sized and installed, ozone will actually act as an "insurance policy" to help to protect your pool or spa. Ozone can help to prevent scale build up and it can have a stabilizing effect on water balance parameters. Corrosive or scale forming water is much more unlikely. Your equipment should run cleaner and last longer.

Q. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I WILL SEE A CHEMICAL COST SAVING IF I USE OZONE?

A. Yes! Ozone can assist chlorine or bromine sanitizers in the pool to work more effectively. As a result, chemical usage may decrease. Of course, the frequency of pool or spa usage, bather/swimmer load, climate and other variables will affect the actual amount of savings. However, with proper equipment and water chemistry maintenance, many ozone users have experienced substantial reductions in the need for sanitizers as well as other specialty chemicals such as algaecides and clarifiers.
